Aadhaar mobile number update

In general, there are four scenarios in which you can link a phone number to your Aadhaar account.

The first being auto-registering your phone number while getting your Aadhaar, the second is linking your phone number after obtaining an Aadhaar (non-linked account) and the third scenario is updating a new mobile number with your Aadhaar.

Let’s look into the details.

1. Registering Mobile Number During Aadhaar Enrollment

While applying for Aadhaar card, you will receive an option to provide mobile number. The same gets enrolled with your Aadhaar card through auto-linking.

But if you have not linked your mobile number to Aadhaar during the enrollment, then you may have to follow scenario 2.

2. Linking Mobile Number After Getting An Aadhaar

The first question you might want to ask now is ‘can I update my mobile number in Aadhaar online?’

If you haven’t registered your mobile number with Aadhaar yet or do not possess your Aadhaar-linked phone number anymore, then the answer is ‘no’.

To authenticate online transactions, an OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent the registered number.  Hence it is important to have your mobile number linked to Aadhaar.

So you must have a mobile number registered with Aadhaar to get the OTP for doing online updation.

How do you update your phone number?

Well, you must personally visit the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre, fill out a form stating that you want to update your phone number in Aadhaar. You also need to carry a copy of your Aadhaar card to the centre.

Another way to update your Aadhaar details is by sending an application through Post to UIDAI.

You need to fill the Aadhaar Update Form available on the UIDAI portal. Send the hard copy of the filled form along with supporting documents to UIDAI.

You can send the form to either of the two addresses given below:

UIDAI Post Box No. 10, Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh – 480001, India

UIDAI Post Box No. 99, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad – 500034, India

3. Update New Mobile Number With Aadhaar Online

If you already have a mobile number linked to your Aadhaar account, but want to switch it to another mobile number, then the easiest route would be getting it done online through the Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal or by logging on the UIDAI website.

This will enable you to change your mobile number by entering just your Aadhaar number and OTP.

Along with these supporting documents of address and identity are requires in certain cases.

After this, you will be provided with an Update Request Number (URN) which you must keep for future reference.

Another option is to send a request for updating your new mobile number through post or by visiting an Aadhaar Center.

4. Update Aadhaar In case Of Loss of Mobile Number

If you have lost your current Aadhaar-enabled (registered) mobile number, then you have to either visit an Aadhaar Center or via post (explained in Step 2).

You cannot change the number online since you may not possess your lost mobile number to receive an OTP, which is a must for online updation.

Why Link Phone Number With Aadhaar?

Most citizens have already created an Aadhaar account, but not everyone has linked their Aadhaar accounts to their current mobile numbers.

Aadhaar plays a vital role in availing Public services, using online facilities, signing documents online, etc.

So, if you haven’t linked your Aadhaar to your mobile number yet, or if you need to update a new number, it is legal to do so as soon as possible.
